Mark Britt

Mr. Britt loved music as a child. One of his earliest memories was going with his mother to see ‘The Sound of Music’ in the movie theater…several times. His parents had to buy a second copy of the soundtrack because he had to listen to it every Sunday afternoon.

Mr. Britt began his formal musical training in general music classes in Spring Lake, Michigan. In fourth grade his passion of music grew when he began to play clarinet. At recess he would watch the high school marching band rehearse for their Friday night football performances and he saw his first live musical. Moving to Middletown, Ohio in middle school, Mr. Britt was active in his chorus, concert and pep bands and performed in musicals and plays. In middle school he was also in the Middletown Youth Symphony. At Middletown High School he was active in marching, concert, and pep bands, orchestra, chorus. His orchestra was fortunate to perform with pianist Lorin Hollander on several occasions. He was also able to perform in adult ensembles including the Middletown Symphony and Southwestern Ohio Symphonic Band. Mr. Britt was also a member of the All-Ohio State Fair Band, living at the Ohio State Fairgrounds and performing for several weeks.

Mr. Britt attended and graduated from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. He was active in the marching band, concert band, wind ensemble, choir, and in the music education department. He feels fortunate to have studied at such an amazing institution, and been a colleague of so many people who have fostered a love of music.

Throughout his career Mr. Britt has had the great joy to work with all levels of musicians. He has taught in K-12 public schools in Central Illinois, and taught K-8 music in the Chicago Public Schools from 2005-2016. To help with an ill family member, Mr Britt needed to move to Texas and for two years he taught music in Dripping Springs ISD. Mr. Britt is so excited to return to Chicago and loves the Funston Family. His previous students have been fortunate to have performed at the House of Blues, Fourth Presbyterian Church in downtown Chicago and one former student was a finalist on Season 12 of American Idol.

Mr. Britt has earned his Level III Certificate in Orff, studying with Jean Hersey, Cynthia Seputis and Chris Judah-Lauder at Vandercook College of Music. He also has begun his Kodaly Levels certification at Texas State University with Philip Tacka, Micheal Houlahan and Gabriela Montoya-Stier. He has also studied Dalcroze Eurhythmics with David Frego and the Richards Institute’s Education Through Music. Mr. Britt believes in having the students learning music with a wide variety of music, movement, singing, playing games and increasing social/emotional awareness.
