Kodaly and Orff: Making Music Together. Middle School

This unit is designed to introduce students to the structures, procedures/routines, and tasks of being aware and building community, and to set the foundations for their new learning community. These lessons are dedicated to making music real in their worlds, getting students excited and ready to learn, supporting social learning, and having them identify themselves as musicians. This unit is aimed at building enduring habits of good reading, singing, playing and creating music using the Kodaly Today and Orff-based Gameplan curriculum.

Middle School

Rhythm: Demonstrate pulse (individually/group). Identify dotted quarter note and eighth note and eighth and two sixteenth notes. Demonstrate Question/Answer (body percussion/unpitched/barred instruments/guitar). Melody: Students will develop a repertoire of songs. Students will demonstrate proper vocal technique. Students will review treble clef and bass clef lines and spaces. Students will explore chord charts and tablature. Harmony: Students will demonstrate proper mallet technique. Students will experience canon/round. Students experience ostinato. Students will distinguish between major/minor. Students will accompany on instruments. Form: Students will demonstrate phrase. Students will experience rondo. Timbre: Identify unpitched and pitched percussion along with guitars. Students will demonstrate musical expression through speaking, singing and performing. Students will identify piano, mezzo forte, forte and other dynamics.
