Kodaly and Orff: Making Music Together. First Grade

This unit is designed to introduce students to the structures, procedures/routines, and tasks of being aware and building community, and to set the foundations for their new learning community. These lessons are dedicated to making music real in their worlds, getting students excited and ready to learn, supporting social learning, and having them identify themselves as musicians. This unit is aimed at building enduring habits of good reading, singing, playing and creating music using the Kodaly Today and Orff-based Gameplan curriculum.

Cognitive Skills:

The skills student must have in order to meet the standards.

1st Grade

Rhythm: Demonstrate pulse (individually/group). Identify sound/silence. Experience fast/slow. Experience 2/4, 4/4, 6/8 meter. Identify rest as symbol. Identify TaDi as symbol. Melody: Students will develop a repertoire of songs. Students will differentiate between high/low. Experience up/down. Harmony: Students will develop proper mallet technique. Students will demonstrate simple bordun (chord). Form: Students will experience same/different. Students will identify phrase. Timbre: Identify unpitched percussion. Students will differentiate between vocal qualities (speak/sing/whisper/shout). Explore dramatic play. Students will demonstrate dynamics (loud/quiet).
